Beaumaris Castle, Anglesey

Demolition and Foundation Repairs / Stabilisation to Moat Walls

The last and largest of King Edward I's Welsh fortifications dating back to the 13th century, Historic Monument, Beaumaris Castle, was in desperate need of repair works to the moat wall, which had collapsed with the many hundreds of years of wear and tear from the moat and coastal conditions.

Antares Construction had previously recommended the use of Shire Piles to Opus International Consultants (working on behalf of CADW), and a design was drawn up for the use of this system to be used to stabilise the new foundations needed in order to re-build the collapsed moat walls in two locations around the site.

First, the moat had to be diverted in order to allow space and conditions suitable for the piling / reinstatement work. The existing collapsed stonework was carefully removed and stored on site for re-use where possible. Following removal of the stonework, the new piled foundations were installed, followed by a new concrete bank (ready for finishing in stonework)
